Topic: Joseph – His Choices When Life Does Not Make Sense
Scripture Reading: Genesis 39
Introduction: The Background
Genesis 39:6b–7
Joseph's situation made him vulnerable to temptation.
- Joseph was isolated from family and friends.
- Joseph was probably lonely and discouraged.
- Joseph's righteousness had brought little reward.
- Joseph was both competent and handsome.
- A powerful woman made repeated attempts to seduce Joseph.
A. Joseph's Response — Genesis 39:8–12
- Joseph said "No!" and knew why.
- Joseph refused to betray those who trusted him. (v.8)
- Joseph focused on what he had rather than what he could not have. (v.9)
- Joseph recognized that all sin is ultimately against God. (v.9)
- Joseph established clear boundaries. (v.10)
- Joseph knew when to resist and when to run. (vv.11–12)
B. The Outcome — Genesis 39:13–20a
- Potiphar's wife falsely accused Joseph of sexual assault. (vv.13–18)
- Potiphar believed her lies and became very angry. (v.19)
- Potiphar had Joseph put in prison. (v.20)
C. The Perspective
Even though Joseph experienced:
- Unfulfilled desires
- False accusation
- Ruined reputation
- Unjust imprisonment
He chose to cling to his trust in God in spite of his circumstances.
Conclusion: Why would God allow all these detours?
- Because God cares more about the development of the dreamer than He cares about the fulfillment of the dream.

- Joseph's circumstances made him vulnerable to temptation. What circumstances in your life make sexual immorality attractive to you?
- What boundaries do you currently have in place? What other boundaries do you need to establish?
- What circumstances tempt you to abandon your trust in God?
- How can you deepen your trust in God in spite of your circumstances?
